Jedd Fisch Remains Noncommittal on Quarterback Decision
The third-year Washington Huskies head coach didn't offer a decision on whether Elijah Brown or Demond Williams Jr. will be the team's starter going forward.
The Washington Huskies offense showed sustained signs of life against a Big Ten opponent for the first time this season against the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday.
Third-year quarterback Elijah Brown made his first start since transferring to Washington from the Stanford Cardinal this offseason in place of injured third-year signal-caller Demond Williams Jr.
Brown had a mixed bag in his first UW start, but still was able to guide the team to victory. He went 21-for-27 for 302 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. With Brown under center, Washington (4-3 overall, 1-3 in Big Ten play) won its first Big Ten game of the season against Purdue, a 38-26 result , and scored more than 24 points against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent for the first time this year.
Williams was available in pads on the sidelines in an emergency quarterback scenario.
The Huskies will have a much-needed bye week this week and will next be in action on the road against the Nebraska Cornhuskers at a to-be-determined time Oct. 31 (Halloween) in Lincon, Neb.
Despite Washington having its best overall performance as an offense this season, aside from a 48-16 win against the Eastern Washington Eagles of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), head coach Jedd Fisch was noncommittal about which quarterback will start against Nebraska.
"No we're not going to make any assumptions like that," Fisch said after the game, according to a post on "X" shared by Dave Mahler. "We're going to enjoy tonight and then we'll be coaches on Sunday."
In six starts this season (five of which were full games), Williams has completed 66.7% of his passes for 1,396 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions and a quarterback rating (QBR) of 41.3, which ranks 105th in the country. He's added another 183 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 64 runs.
In three appearances (one start), Brown has completed 73.9% of his passes for 578 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions and has a QBR of 73.8.
In Brown's three halves over the last two weeks at the helm of the team, the Huskies offense has scored 59 points.
In two-and-a-half Big Ten games (five halves), Williams has led the Washington offense to 48 points.
The Huskies have five more games left on their schedule: the one against Nebraska, one against the Penn State Nittany Lions at home Nov. 7, another on the road against the Michigan State Spartans on Nov. 14, another at home against the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers on Nov. 21 and UW will wrap up the season on the road against the Oregon Ducks on Nov. 28. Washington will need to win two more games in that slate to be bowl-eligible.
