Independence Football retires Atticus Goodson’s #3 jersey

COAL CITY, WV (WVNS) - Independence High School Football legend Atticus Goodson became the first player in program history to have his jersey retired.

This adds to the long line of firsts Goodson brought to the Patriots.

He led Indy to their first state championship game appearance and became the first Raleigh County player to bring home the Kennedy Award since the 1940's. Not to mention, he was the first Patriot player to be selected Captain of the All-State team.

The Patriots held a special ceremony at halftime of their home win against Armstrong to ensure no other player after Micah Cuthbert will wear his jersey number 3.

"One of the only things that I wanted when I started playing football here is I wanted in the Hall of Fame and to have my jersey retired and with all these people here in the stands and everything…it really means a lot," said Goodson.

Goodson helped thrust the program into the winning ways they've become well accustomed to over the last several years.

Looking back, even though Indy never got a title during Atticus's time in red, white, and blue, he shares that he will cherish those memories and the bonds he made with his Independence Football brothers forever.
