After his year-long loan with Arsenal from Bournemouth ended in 2025, Neto joined Botafogo but decided to terminate his contract by mutual consent in June. His disappointing stint in Brazil was summed up in his final game for the club, receiving a red card for time-wasting and swearing at the referee.

Right-back: Dani Carvajal, 34 - £51.5m in 2018

Arguably one of the best right-backs of his generation, Carvajal left Real Madrid after 23 years this summer. During his time at the Spanish giants, he made 450 appearances, and leaves as one of the most decorated players in history with 27 titles, including six Champions League titles.

Centre-back: Sergio Ramos, 40 - £43m in 2018

Another Real Madrid icon finds himself on the free agent list. Ramos joined Los Blancos in 2005 and spent 16 years at the club, scoring 101 goals in 671 appearances, winning 23 trophies along the way. He's since played for PSG, Sevilla and most recently Mexican side Monterrey, and despite not having had a club since January 2026, the Spanish icon is yet to announce his retirement from football.

Centre-back: David Alaba, 34 - £55.8m in 2018

Former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid defender Alaba is on the free agent market after Real decided not to renew the 34-year-old's contract this summer. An illustrious career consisting of 35 trophies, including 12 league titles and four Champions Leagues, the Austrian could be an asset to any club looking to bolster their defensive unit.

Left-back: Oleksandr Zinchenko, 29 - £36m in 2023

Four-time Premier League winner Zinchenko is without a club since his injury-ridden spell at Ajax reduced the Ukrainian to just 20 minutes on the pitch. He was previously on loan at Nottingham Forest from Arsenal for the 2025/26 season, but Forest decided to cut it short in January after limited game time.

Central midfielder: Paul Pogba, 33 - £85.9m in 2019

The 2018 World Cup-winning midfielder signed for Ligue 1 side Monaco on a two-year deal last summer after serving an 18-month football suspension for a doping offence. However, the contract was terminated this summer by mutual consent.

Central midfielder: Dele Alli, 30 - £85.9m in 2018

The once wonderkid - who produced an 18-goal 2016/17 Premier League campaign for Spurs and helped England reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals - has struggled in recent years with injuries and form. Alli has been without a club since his contract was terminated at Como in 2025 by mutual consent but has yet to officially retire.

Central midfielder: Philippe Coutinho, 34 - £128.8m in 2018

Former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder Coutinho has been a free agent since he left his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in February. The Brazilian struggled to reach the levels he showed at Liverpool since signing for Barcelona in a mega-money move in 2018.

Right-wing: Raheem Sterling, 31 - £137.4m in 2019

Having been released by Feyenoord after just three months, Sterling has been through a difficult period on-and-off the pitch. Last month he was charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide and is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court for a hearing on September 15. Football-wise, he hasn't scored since September 2024, when he bagged Arsenal's fourth in a 5-1 victory over Bolton in the Carabao Cup.

Left-wing: Jadon Sancho, 26 - £111.6m in 2020

It's been five years since Sancho's £73m move to Man Utd from Borussia Dortmund, and according to Sky in Germany , talks have taken place with his former club after indicating a willingness to join. The winger most recently featured in Aston Villa's Europa League-winning squad.

Striker: Karim Benzema, 38 - £51.5m in 2016

The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner has spent the last three years in Saudi Arabia, spending two-and-a-half years with Al Ittihad before moving to Al Hilal on a one-and-a-half-year deal, which was terminated by mutual agreement this summer.
