Baum scores on debut to secure narrow Arsenal win

Nineteen-year-old winger Lisa Baum scored on her Arsenal debut to secure a 1-0 win at Brighton.

The winger introduced herself in emphatic fashion after dancing around defenders and firing her shot into the top left corner to break the deadlock in the 10th minute.

The new-look Arsenal side - featuring new signings Misa, Georgia Stanway and Ona Battle - came close to doubling the lead but were short of their usual standards in front of goal to start the new season.

Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius both came close but squandered opportunities from close range.

Renee Slegers' side were then forced to rely on a confident defensive performance to keep Brighton at bay but Arturo Ruiz will take positives from a spirited performance in his first game in charge despite the result.

Spurs dominate West Ham as debutant Hanson shines

Tottenham started their WSL in convincing fashion with a comfortable 3-1 victory over West Ham United.

The Hammers made 10 signings during the summer transfer window, four of whom started at Brisbane Road, but the visitors struggled to gel as Spurs controlled the tempo with an impressive level of intensity and the added bit of quality.

Kirsty Hanson was the star of the show on her Spurs debut, scoring twice, including an incredible curling effort from outside the 18-yard box.

It was Signe Gaupset who got things started though, reacting quickest to a loose ball finding the net via the inside of the post with a smart finish on the bounce. She then turned provider for Hanson's first, running from beyond the halfway line before sliding the Scot in to apply the finishing touch.

Spurs had plenty of chances to extend their lead in the second half, with Cathinka Tandberg and Julie Blakstad missing the pick of the opportunities.

They did finally get a third as Hanson one-upped herself with her second of the afternoon. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, the winger wasn't closed down and was allowed to open up her body and find the far top corner beyond a stranded Constance Picaud.

Viviane Asseyi grabbed a stoppage-time consolation to provide something for the visitors to cheer, but it mattered little. Martin Ho's side repeated the same result as they managed on the opening day against the Hammers last season, but in even more convincing fashion.

Defending champs City get off to winning start - but it wasn't perfect

Manchester City's slow start to the game was quickly rectified in the second half as goals from Mary Fowler and Khadija Shaw secured a 2-0 win against Birmingham City to begin their WSL title defence.

City were left frustrated by the promoted side in the first half until Fowler's low shot found the bottom right corner to break the deadlock in the 49th minute.

Shaw would rise highest to meet Kerstin Casparij's corner six minutes later to score her first of the afternoon.

Beth Mead made her debut for the club off the bench and was the provider for the pick of the goals as Shaw glanced home a second header of the day to add a third.

Jade Rose's error at the back after being caught on the ball in spectacular fashion to allow a late consolation goal for Oceane Hurtre marked the only blemish on what was a strong start to the season for the champions.

Liverpool give Charlton rude welcome to top flight in thrashing

It took Liverpool 13 games to win their first WSL match last season, but there was no such wait this time around as they thumped promoted Charlton 4-0 in their season's opener.

Grace Fisk will steal the headlines, with the central defender grabbing the first two goals to put the Reds on course for victory, but debutant Vivien Endemann was the standout for the visitors on her debut.

Fisk opened the scoring inside eight minutes with a tap-in on the line, but her second couldn't have been more different. After Endemann's cut-back managed to evade everyone in the area, the Liverpool skipper met it on the edge of the box with an inch perfect strike into the top corner.

Endemann then got the goal she thoroughly deserved with a thunderous drive just after the hour mark, with Cornelia Kapocs rounding things off with a stoppage-time penalty.

Charlton never really looked like threatening as the scoreline suggests, but Gareth Taylor's Liverpool end the opening weekend top of the league.

Crystal Palace became the only promoted side to pick up all three points on the opening weekend thanks to a 1-0 win over Everton.

Returning to the top flight after just a year in WSL 2, the Eagles issued a statement of intent as Lexi Lloyd-Smith notched the only goal of the game on her debut in the 34th minute.

Things could have been better for Lloyd-Smith had her second not been ruled out for offside. But in the end Palace were able to hold on despite late pressure from the visitors to take victory.
