Dabo Swinney's Clemson Contract Buyout, Details Revealed After 41-Point Loss to Lane Kiffin, LSU

There was a time not long ago when Dabo Swinney was considered one of the best coaches in college football as his Clemson Tigers were consistently competing for national championships.

However, things continued to trend in the wrong direction Saturday during a 51-10 loss to Lane Kiffin and LSU, which brought Swinney's contract buyout situation under the spotlight.

Robby Kalland of CBS Sports reported Clemson would save $3 million by firing Swinney during the 2026 season instead of after it with a flat-rate buyout of $57 million compared to the $60 million for his total compensation starting in 2027. The buyout clause features a descending flat rate for the first five years, and this is the fifth year on his deal.

Yet Swinney's contract does not feature a mitigation clause, meaning the Tigers would be on the hook for the entirety of the buyout even if he took another job.

Such a mitigation clause saved Penn State a significant amount of money after it fired James Franklin.

He dropped his buyout from $49 million to $9 million and became Virginia Tech's coach after the Nittany Lions moved on, but Clemson wouldn't get that type of reprieve if Swinney found his next opportunity.

Despite the recent struggles for the Tigers, he likely wouldn't have to wait long to find that opportunity.

After all, Swinney led Clemson to the College Football Playoff national championship game four times in a five-year span from 2015 through 2019. He won the national title twice during that run and established the ACC program as one of the best in the sport.

Even when the Tigers fell short of those expectations the following three years, they still won double-digit games in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Still, things have trended in the opposite direction of late, as Clemson lost four games in 2023 and again in 2024 before going an ugly 7-6 last year. Last year's Clemson team had nine players selected in the NFL draft with four of them going in the first two rounds, so talent didn't appear to be the issue.

"Swinney's Tigers were once perennial national title contenders and favorites to win the ACC, but as college football has changed in the NIL and transfer portal era, Swinney's stubbornness has seen the Tigers stumble off that perch atop the ACC," Kalland wrote.

With last year's struggles looming, Swinney was under plenty of pressure to bounce back in a high-profile showdown with LSU on Saturday. Instead, his team was blown out and managed just 105 passing yards to go with 40 yards on the ground at 1.5 yards per carry.

Clemson has not enjoyed as much success as many of its marquee-program counterparts in the modern era of college football, and that could eventually mean moving on from the winningest coach in school history if things don't turn around the rest of this season.
