Texas Tech football adds Florida State QB out of transfer portal

Joey McGuire wasn't lying when he said he was open to adding more pieces to the Texas Tech football team for the 2026 season.

The Red Raiders landed a commitment from Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos out of the transfer portal, multiple outlets reported Wednesday. Castellanos got an injunction in the state of Kentucky on Friday that allowed him a fifth year of eligibility (which functions outside of the stay earned by the NCAA in the Colorado case the same day).

Castellanos shouldn't be expected to start, but he provides insurance behind Will Hammond and adds another veteran voice in the room along with Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis . Lloyd Jones II, Stephen Cannon and Holden Phillips are also on roster, though it's unclear how many of the QBs Texas Tech will keep on the roster for the season, which is limited to 105 players.

Castellanos (5-foot-11, 201 pounds) began his career at Boston College before heading to Florida State last year, a season in which he helped the Seminoles knock off Alabama in the first game of the season.

In his four-year college career thus far, Castellanos has totaled 6,449 yards, 48 touchdowns and 28 interceptions passing along with 1,984 yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground.
