Latest Heisman Trophy Odds for Jeremiah Smith, Darian Mensah, More After Malachi Toney Injury Update
Malachi Toney's Heisman hopes likely came to a close on Wednesday.
Malachi Toney's Heisman hopes likely came to a close on Wednesday.
The Miami wideout, following news that that he'll will surgery on his injured ankle and is potentially facing four weeks or more on the sidelines, no longer ranks among FanDuel's top favorites for the award.
Instead, Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith (+160), Toney's teammate Darian Mensah (+165), Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr (+550), Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss (+950) and LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt (+3500) are currently the frontrunners.
Just last week, Toney was No. 3 in the odds for the award. But Miami announced Wednesday that he "sustained an injury during Wednesday's practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff. We will share additional updates as appropriate."
Per multiple reports, he's dealing with a high-ankle sprain that will likely end his regular season and seemingly keep him out until the College Football Playoff should Miami qualify.
The undefeated and top-ranked Hurricanes (8-0) still have Notre Dame, Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College on the schedule, alongside a potential berth in the ACC Championship Game. Being without Toney, one of the most electric playmakers in the sport, won't make running the table easy.
Toney has registered 73 catches for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. He's been awesome.
But so has the man throwing him the ball. Mensah has 2,425 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and just one interception on the season, adding another two scores on the ground.
Perhaps nobody has been more impressive than Ohio State's Smith, however. The Buckeyes' superstar has 62 catches for 1,067 yards and 13 touchdowns, numbers that are going to look ridiculous by the time the season is over.
Smith and Mensah have a pretty wide gulf on the field at the moment, though Carr is making his case, throwing for 1,849 yards, 18 touchdowns and a pick while rushing for three scores.
If Notre Dame upsets Miami on Saturday and Carr has a big game, the odds will likely fluctuate in a significant way.
