EPL demands a different kind of intensity: Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak believes Liverpool's greatest strength extends beyond tactics or personnel. It lies in the calm authority of captain Virgil van Dijk, Isak told TOI in an interaction facilitated by JioStar. The Swedish striker spoke about adapting to Arne Slot's possession-based system, and now, Andoni Iraola's high-intensity football, returning from injury, and the passion of Liverpool's global fanbase. Excerpts:Liverpool looks like a team in its rebuilding phase. From a striker's perspective, what makes this Liverpool team different from the previous champions?Yes, it's a completely new team with a lot of new players and young players. I don't really know how to explain it. It's just that different players make it a different team.You've now played under Andoni Iraola, who is known for his vertical high-intensity football, as well as Arne Slot, whose approach is more controlled, possession-based. As a striker, what is the biggest adjustment you had to make without the ball?I think for me, it's been about defending in positions where I would be in a good position when we win the ball, ready to attack, ready to counter quickly. So, it's always about thinking where you're at.That spell on the sidelines, did that change the way you watch football? Were you analysing defenders and movements more than when you were actually playing?No, not really. I mean, when I was injured, I didn't watch too much. I followed Liverpool and that was about it. And then I was just doing my rehab.Fans in India stay up late to watch matches. What is your message to them?Of course, we appreciate all support from overseas where we understand that the times are not always very suitable. Hopefully we can do well and have a good season, which makes staying up late more worth it.What has struck you the most about Liverpool as a club?The fans. Their passion and dedication to the club is incredible. Liverpool is a club rich in culture, history, and tradition. It's been really nice to see that up close.You've played in Germany, Spain before you came to England, so how different is the Premier League compared to these other leagues?Every league has its own style and football culture. The Premier League is more physical and faster. Spain is more controlled and technical. There are pros and cons to every league, but the Premier League demands a different kind of intensity.Your captain Virgil van Dijk picked you as the Liverpool player to watch out for this season, so what are your reactions? And what qualities about Van Dijk do you admire the most?I was surprised to hear that. There are so many players in this squad who can have a big season. Hopefully all of us can step up. As for Van Dijk, the thing that stands out most is how calm he is. Whether he's on the ball or defending, he never looks rushed.
