'I want Chelsea to get back to winning ways': Ashley Cole on club's changing identity

From the Jose Mourinho era to Chelsea’s rise as European champions, Ashley Cole has witnessed the club’s transformation into one of football’s biggest forces. In an interaction facilitated by JioStar, the former England and Chelsea defender told TOI about Chelsea’s need to rediscover their trophy-winning mentality and the progress of Xabi Alonso’s young squad.Excerpts...You played in Mourinho’s famed Chelsea. What made it such a special club during that period? In the Mourinho-era there was an owner that wanted to win and back Jose to fulfill what he wanted to do, which was to win titles. Whatever Jose needed, Roman (Abramovich) was on hand to allow him the tools to do that. It was down to us on the pitch to continue to keep winning, and continue this legacy of upholding what Jose started. Now it’s quite difficult because I don’t understand what the owners are asking the manager to do, but as a fan I want Chelsea to get back to winning ways.Chelsea have had an entertaining but inconsistent start under Xabi Alonso...Whenever you have a young squad, there is going to be some inconsistencies and you have to bear with them. As a manager, you have to understand that. Can they compete for the title? In my opinion I don’t see it this year. I think we have to understand this is not the Chelsea of old. There’s going to be moments through the season where fans think they can compete because of some really good performances. Right now it’s not geared to win and there’s going to be moments of inconsistency and you have to be on board with that. Hopefully, Alonso can limit the inconsistencies. What do Arsenal need to do differently to successfully defend their Premier League title?Winning games, of course. They’re certainly going to have to adapt.(Watch Chelsea take on Manchester United in the Premier League on October 31, 6 PM onwards, LIVE & Exclusive on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network)Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
