Cristiano Ronaldo Updates His Portugal Future amid Retirement Speculation After 2026 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo has made a decision regarding his future with Portugal after the World Cup.

The soccer legend said Thursday that he plans to continue playing with his country's national team amid speculation swirling around his potential retirement.

"I still believe that I'm able to help the national team to reach what they want," Ronaldo said. "I think I can give the national team my support, not only through the goals, but also outside of football. This is a new generation, a young generation. But for me, the basic point and the most important point is to be able to score goals inside the pitch and help the team to win games."

During the World Cup, it was reported that the tournament would be Ronaldo's "last dance" with Portugal before retiring from international football.

Ronaldo disputed that report, however, saying after Portugal's win in the Round of 32 that he would wait until after the World Cup to make a decision about his future.

"I don't make reckless decisions... I will decide after the tournament, not now," Ronaldo said .

In an interview with Vogue 's Gaby Wood last month, Ronaldo said that "this is probably my last year of football," though he didn't go into the specifics of when he would officially call it quits.

"I have my future all mapped out," he said. "I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one. And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I've earned — what we've earned. Because after all it's been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."

While Ronaldo plans to continue his international career, it's fair to assume he won't play in another World Cup. By the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, Ronaldo will be 45 years old.

It's worth noting, however, that his home country will host the next World Cup, which could be the motivation he needs to extend his career by a few more years.

Even if he doesn't play in the 2030 World Cup, Ronaldo will have the chance for a farewell tour with Portugal over the next few months as his iconic career nears its end.
