Mayville State QB in medically induced coma after sustaining severe head injury

Mayville State announced Sunday that quarterback Matt Donovan was in a medically induced coma after suffering a head injury during the team's game against Simpson University on Saturday.

Donovan was injured in the third quarter of the NAIA team's 42-41 win on a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was life-flighted to Fargo (N.D.), which is approximately 60 miles to the southeast.

"Once he arrived in Fargo, he underwent surgery on his brain that lasted just over two hours, where they removed portions of his skull in order to release the pressure from his brain," a school statement said. "For context, the pressure in the average person's brain is a 4, his was many times more than that. After leaving surgery, he was released into the intensive care unit and is under some of the best medical care in the midwest. [Sunday morning], his eyes reacted to light in a normal manner, which caused the neurosurgeon to say last night was a win. He is still in a medically-induced coma and is fighting like crazy. Your prayers are working and encouraged at this time."

A GoFundMe started by Donovan's sister Ashley Klar had already reached nearly $30,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

"The funds raised will help support Matthew's family with lodging and dining while we are away from home, along with medical expenses related to his care and recovery," Klar wrote.

Donovan transferred to Mayville State from Minot State and previously played at Bemidji State. He played high school football at Kasson-Mantorville in Minnesota.
