Jeremiah Smith, Sayin's Box Score Stats, Highlights, Heisman Hype from Ohio State vs. Iowa
If there was any doubt about who the most dominant player in college football is right now, Jeremiah Smith put the argument to rest on Saturday with another historic outing in Ohio State's 31-14 win over Iowa.
If there was any doubt about who the most dominant player in college football is right now, Jeremiah Smith put the argument to rest on Saturday with another historic outing in Ohio State's 31-14 win over Iowa.
Smith, who entered the day leading FBS in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, added 206 yards and two touchdowns to his season total to help the Buckeyes win.
Ohio State came into the game favored by 14.5 points on the road, per FanDuel Sportsbook . It was able to cover the spread by scoring 21 unanswered points at one period from the second through fourth quarters.
Two weeks after setting the Ohio State record for receiving yards, Smith became the school's all-time leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns on Saturday.
The touchdown record came on Smith's second score of the day from 57 yards in the third quarter.
Smith's receptions record was on a much less dramatic play, but still a historic moment in a career already full of them.
Smith's performance moved him into the top spot in the latest Heisman odds at +115 (bet $100 to win $115) from FanDuel.
The feeling about Smith's Heisman candidacy was very strong among those who were watching him play against the Hawkeyes.
It's hard to come up with new superlatives to describe Smith since he has been doing this for three seasons now, though the results through five games in 2026 might be on another level.
Smith has surpassed the 200-yard mark in back-to-back games. His worst game of the season was against Kent State with 85 yards on five catches when he basically didn't have to play in the second half because it was 35-0 at halftime.
Taking out that game, Smith's lowest receiving yardage total in the other four contests is 151 yards against Ball State. His 823 receiving yards are more than UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava has passing (820) entering play on Saturday.
Given how dominant Smith has been, it's hard to separate how much of Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin's success this year is a product of his growth or playing alongside the best player in college football.
Sayin is now up to 1,530 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception with a 72.5 completion percentage through five games.
There's no doubt Smith is the straw stirring the drink for Ohio State. Sayin's development will go a long way toward ensuring the Buckeyes remain a factor in the playoff race as their margin of error narrowed following the loss to Texas.
Saturday was the Buckeyes' first big test since that Sept. 12 defeat, as they were on the road against an undefeated Big Ten opponent. They looked a little sluggish early before finally pulling away.
Ohio State gets to return home next week to host Maryland before a showdown against No. 6 Indiana in Bloomington on Oct. 10. The Hoosiers defeated OSU in the Big Ten Championship Game last season en route to winning a national title.
