The heat had began to ramp up on the German boss after the Magpies were booed off at the end of a limp home defeat to Everton on Monday night but a chalk-and-cheese showing in west London lacked only the three points in a game they arguably shaded.

Newcastle thought they had earned a first-half lead when Dan Burn nodded home from a corner but his celebrations in front of his old fans were cut short with Yoane Wissa penalised for a shirt pull on Timothy Castagne, a decision which left Jaissle fuming.

There would have been no need for that VAR intervention had Harvey Barnes buried his chance when played in behind moments earlier, but aimed hisfinish too close to Bernd Leno when clean through.

The best Fulham could muster, despite their territorial dominance, was a Josh King volley and a glancing header from their internationally-recognised teenager, as their recent struggles in front of goal continued.

The game appeared to be drifting towards a first draw between these two in 19 Premier League meetings in the capital, until a loose pass from Cesar Palacios across midfield allowed Murphy to run at Antonee Robinson before turning inside and unleashing an unstoppable effort beyond Leno.

The relief in Jaissle's celebration was evident but was only a brief respite with Fulham's messy equaliser coming only three minutes later, as Palacios' pass deflected into the path of Muniz and his inventive flick beat Lukas Hornicek with some help from Burn.

It was his first Premier League goal in seven months but came at the perfect time to rescue a point for the hosts, and deny Jaissle a win he would have found so personally valuable.

"I learned that here, the phrase 'soft decision'. That's what I meant.

"Without taking it as an excuse, last week we had an occasion where [Fabian Schar] was bleeding in the face and to have this as a comparison, it's difficult to understand but that's my point of view without paying any fines."

Arbeloa delighted with Muniz contribution

"I felt the game was there for [Muniz]. They were marking us man-to-man, we had the space in front and they forced us to play long balls. Rodrigo is very strong in this situation.

"He scored a goal but they couldn't stop him without fouls. He's very important for us and for me."

13: SAVE! Oscar Bobb's curling effort is turned away by Lukas Hornicek.

14: OVER! Gonzalo Garcia nods over at the back post from a corner.

32: BIG CHANCE! Barnes has to bury the ball when played in behind but shoots straight at Leno.

33: NO GOAL! Burn has the ball in the Fulham net from the resulting corner but is denied a goal by Wissa's pull on Castagne.

37: SAVE! King catches a volley sweetly from 20 yards but is denied by a comfortable Hornicek save.

80: GOAL! Murphy makes the most of Berge's loose pass after racing forward and unleashing a stunning curling effort into the far corner.

83: GOAL! Muniz turns home an instant equaliser with the outside of his boot after Palacios' pass deflects into his path.

90+2: SAVE! Hornicek denies Ryan Sessegnon's late half-volley with a flying stop.
