The Big 12, which has been under the leadership of commissioner Brett Yormark since August 2022, is set to undergo a major change in the coming months. According to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, Yormark is expected to leave his current position in favor of a role outside of college sports. He will remain with the conference through January 2027.

Yormark, who was responsible for the Big 12's current media rights agreement with ESPN and Fox Sports, received backlash from fans when he signed a sponsorship deal with energy drink brand "Monster" ahead of the start of the current college football season.

As the report of Yormark's decision spread on social media, fans chimed in, with many agreeing it was the right call for the betterment of the conference.

"Disastrous tenure. The Monster Energy sponsorship was too far. Hopefully, the replacement will cancel this deal (doubt it)."

Brett Yormark Was In Favor of College Football Playoff Expansion

As the College Football Playoff format sits in the middle of a possible expansion with 24 teams being allowed a spot instead of 12, Yormark made his thoughts clear on the same when speaking during the Big 12's Basketball Media Day on Oct. 20.

"When it comes to CFP expansion, the Big 12 has consistently supported greater access for deserving teams across the country. Final negotiations are ongoing, but I remain confident we will land in a place that benefits student-athletes and the future of the sport. It's been a tremendous fall for our conference."

Besides the sponsorship deal, Yormark also faced backlash from the media when he engaged in a social media feud with Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell over scheduling conflicts.

Yormark also found himself in the spotlight in 2023 after his preseason comments wishing Texas Tech would beat Texas so he wouldn't have to hand the Longhorns a trophy as they head out of the Big 12. The Red Raiders, however, did not make the championship game, as Texas beat Oklahoma State, followed by cheers of 'S-E-C' by Longhorns fans.
