The rift between Portugal star striker Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus appears to have reached its breaking point.

According to ESPN, Ronaldo has issued an ultimatum to Portugal, saying he will not return to the national team while Jesus is the coach.

Ronaldo released a lengthy statement explaining what created the conflict with Jesus, saying that despite initially agreeing that "it would be the right choice" to hire Jesus as Roberto Martínez's replacement following his resignation after the 2026 World Cup, the coach "had broken his word to me" multiple times, particularly when he left him on the bench for a Nations League match against Norway.

Things came to a head last week when Jesus said he wasn't going to be starting the 41-year-old in Thursday's match against Denmark, leading Ronaldo to announce that he had left Portugal's national team training camp.

"I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word," Ronaldo said in his statement Tuesday. "For me the truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people. However much it hurts, let them tell me the truth. ... I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp. Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach's word, as those who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine."

Ronaldo acknowledged that he could face punishment for leaving the training camp, but he indicated that he would be willing to return to the team under the right circumstances.

"Therefore, if I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo stated. "This is, believe me, the purest of truths."
