Lucas Carneiro drills winning field goal as time expires to give No. 9 Ole Miss a 41-38 win over No. 24 Louisville

Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro bailed out the Rebels with a 48-yard field goal as time expired for a 41-38 win over Louisville on Sunday night.

The No. 9 Rebels had given up 14 straight points after taking a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter. But an 18-yard completion from Trinidad Chambliss to Caleb Odom set up Carneiro's winner.

Louisville tied the game with 1:28 to go on a 7-yard TD run by QB Lincoln Kienholz. Had the Cardinals scored with less time left, it's plausible that coach Jeff Brohm would have gone for a 2-point conversion instead of a winning extra point. But Louisville kicked the PAT with the hope of getting the ball back or sending the game to overtime.

That did not happen as neither defense had much success in the second half. The teams combined for over 600 yards in the second half as Chambliss threw three touchdowns and rushed for another after halftime.

He finished 21-of-36 passing for 336 yards and those three touchdowns. Two of them went to Deuce Alexander, who had a breakout game with five catches for 159 yards and a pair of 62-yard touchdowns in that second half. Alexander, who is in his second year with the Rebels after transferring from Wake Forest, didn't top the 100-yard mark in any game in 2025.

Ole Miss played much of the second half without star running back Kewan Lacy because of a left thigh bruise. Lacy was on the bench with a heating pad on his leg after rushing 17 times for 61 yards and a score. Lacy rushed over 300 times and scored 24 touchdowns on the ground in 2025.

Kienholz made the first start of his college career on Sunday night. The former Ohio State backup transferred to Louisville in the offseason and was very good as he created big plays out of the pocket. Kienholz was 18-of-29 passing for 307 yards and two scores while also rushing 14 times for 69 yards.

Louisville committed eight penalties while Ole Miss had six and turned the ball over twice in the first half. Both of those turnovers belonged to Chambliss, as he tossed an interception and also fumbled.

The Rebels play Charlotte in Week 2 as a massive favorite before hosting LSU and former coach Lane Kiffin in one of the biggest games of the year in Week 3. Louisville plays Villanova in Week 2 before the Cardinals have a big game in Week 3, too. SMU visits Louisville on Sept. 19 in a game that could have massive ACC implications.
