Colorado takes down Georgia Tech on a blocked field goal as time expires

Colorado's special teams unit redeemed itself on the last play of the game against Georgia Tech.

Boo Carter blocked Aidan Birr's game-winning field goal attempt as time expired to give the Buffaloes a 14-13 win over Georgia Tech .

Carter's block came after QB JuJu Lewis found Charlie Williams for a go-ahead TD with 37 seconds to go. Georgia Tech quickly got into field goal position after the TD, but Carter saved the day.

Before the block, Colorado's special teams shanked a punt, gave up a 100-yard kickoff return TD and had a game-tying field goal blocked in the fourth quarter itself. It had been a disastrous special teams showing for a Colorado team that looked a lot better up front than it did in 2025.

After averaging 3.5 yards a carry a season ago, Colorado's strength Thursday night was on the ground. Before that field goal block midway through the fourth quarter, Colorado ran the ball 15 straight times on a 17-play drive.

Lewis was 14-of-27 passing for 124 yards and a TD, but 60 of those yards came on the final drive. The Buffaloes rushed for 183 yards and converted over 40% of their third downs in offensive coordinator Brennan Marion's first game with the team.

Colorado rushed for more than 183 yards just once in 2025 when it ran 31 times for 193 yards against Wyoming.

It's a massive win for Deion Sanders after Georgia Tech beat the Buffaloes to open the 2025 season. Colorado went 3-9 in 2025 as it lost its final five games of the season. In that losing streak, Lewis sat out to end the season to preserve his redshirt freshman season.

That ultimately didn't matter as the NCAA implemented a five-seasons-in-five-years rule over the summer. But it was a clear sign that Colorado was committed to the former high-profile recruit as its starter of the future.

While the stats weren't especially pretty, the result was good. And so was the throw to Williams. It was Lewis' best throw of the night. If that's a sign of things to come for the Buffaloes, then Colorado should be a much better team than it was a season ago.
