Lane Kiffin declined officials' offer to shorten the second half of No. 11 LSU's 63-14 win over McNeese
The Tigers scored at least 14 points in each quarter.
Lane Kiffin had no interest in shortening the second half of LSU's 63-14 win over McNeese.
Kiffin said after the win that he was approached by officials at the end of halftime whether he would want to shorten the second half. The quarters of a college football game can be abbreviated in the case of a blowout or other circumstances if both teams agree to the clock adjustment.
Kiffin revealed that there was an inquiry about ending the game earlier when he was asked about a timeout he called to start the third quarter. The Tigers led 35-0 at halftime and received the second-half kickoff. After Harlem Berry returned the kickoff to the LSU 19-yard line, Kiffin used his first timeout of the half.
"Well I just wanted to make sure they understood," Kiffin said. "We talked in the locker room and then came out and there was a conversation where [officials] asked me about, do you want to run the clock in the third and fourth quarter? And said no, I don't believe in that. You play the game, we decide when the game's over by the way that we play. And how physical that we play.
"So I told the guys, I told them that we don't do that. And challenged them to come out and play really well. And set a tempo of how you play and a standard regardless whether you're first, second or third team of how you play at LSU."
LSU scored at least 14 points in each quarter as three quarterbacks saw playing time and eight different players had at least one carry, including defensive tackle Deuce Geralds. He scored a 1-yard TD run to cap that opening drive of the second half.
Kiffin is at least the second coach to refuse a shortened second half this year. Portland State coach Chris Fisk declined Oregon's offer to go to 10-minute quarters during the Vikings' 84-0 loss to the Ducks in Week 3.
The win moved LSU to 4-1 overall ahead of a stretch of five games in seven weeks against teams that were ranked in the AP Top 25 entering the weekend. LSU visits Kentucky in Week 6 before hosting Mississippi State in Week 7.
