Bryce Underwood, John Mateer's Box Score Stats, Highlights, Draft Stock from Oklahoma vs. Michigan

The third all-time meeting between Oklahoma and Michigan turned into a defensive slugfest with the Wolverines prevailing 17-10 at the Big House.

A once-anticipated quarterback showdown between Bryce Underwood and John Mateer failed to live up to any hype it might have had.

Michigan, coming off one of the most controversial wins in college football history, came out this week looking like it wanted to send a message after falling out of the AP Top 25 poll with a 91-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter.

Underwood showed off his athletic ability on that scoring drive with a 38-yard run to find the end zone.

The Wolverines added a field goal late in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead before the offense stalled.

Oklahoma came back in the third quarter with its first scoring drive. Mateer went 5-of-5 for 77 yards on the drive, capped off by Mackenzie Alleyne's 22-yard touchdown catch.

That was the peak of Mateer's performance. Michigan cornerback Jyaire Hill undercut a third-down pass from Mateer in the fourth quarter for an interception, Jordan Marshall's one-yard touchdown run two plays later with 7:53 remaining turned out to be the difference in the game.

Given how negative the discussion around Michigan was coming out of the Western Michigan game, head coach Kyle Whittingham is breathing a huge sigh of relief.

The Wolverines could find themselves back in the top 25 next week now that they are 2-0 with a quality win under their belt. They still have a long way to go before looking like an elite program, but this was exactly what they needed to happen.

On the other side of the equation, Brent Venables' seat that seemed like it cooled off after getting a six-year extension last month might be warming up again.

Mateer's 2025 season was disrupted by a thumb injury required surgery, so it was assumed a full offseason would get him back on track. This game just looked like more of the same from the fifth-year senior with one terrific drive, but nothing great around it to help lift his team in a hostile road environment.

Oklahoma will try to rebound at home next week against New Mexico before a brutal two-game stretch against Georgia and Texas. Michigan will stay home next weekend to host UTEP as it looks to start 3-0 for the first time since 2023.
