Big Spring Pathway cancels football game against Coleman

Less than a week after the Big Spring Pathway Warriors kicked off their high school's inaugural season of Texas high school football, the team's schedule for the rest of the 2026 season has been thrown into flux.

The Warriors played their first varsity game last Friday, a 50-6 loss to the Munday Moguls at Scruggs Field in Munday.

Big Spring Pathway's path forward, however, is full of uncertainty.

Less than 96 hours before kickoff of its Week 2 non-district matchup against Coleman, Big Spring Pathway (0-1) announced it was canceling its game against the Bluecats which had been scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Hufford Field in Coleman.

Coleman Independent School District officials confirmed the scheduling change to the Reporter-News on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors have three more non-district games listed on the schedule through the end of September: a Friday night road game against Lubbock Christian (Sept. 11), a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Jal (New Mexico) Panthers (Sept. 19) at Big Spring's Memorial Stadium and a Friday night road game versus San Saba (Sept. 25) to close out their non-district slate.

Big Spring Pathway is the latest among a growing list of charter schools throughout the Lone Star State that have canceled early-season, non-district Texas high school football games this year.

Pathway joins Mesquite PTAA, Hampton Prep and Dallas Gateway as Texas based prep schools who have canceled varsity football games since the latest round of UIL realignment earlier this year.

Mesquite PTAA and Hampton Prep have withdrawn from the UIL entirely, while Dallas Gateway forfeited their Week 1 game last weekend.

The Warriors are slated to begin District 3-2A DI competition against district rivals Crosbyton, Lockney, Ralls, Roscoe and Tahoka starting in Week 7 when Big Spring Pathway visits the Lockney Longhorns (Oct. 9).

The Bluecats, meanwhile, are actively searching for a Week 2 replacement opponent for this weekend, Coleman coach Zach Edington confirmed to the Reporter-News on Tuesday.

Coleman (1-0) earned a hard-fought 16-12 win over San Angelo Grape Creek in its season opener last Friday.

Edington and the Bluecats are actively looking for a West Texas or DFW-based team to replace Big Spring Pathway as their Week 2 opponent.

Coleman's remaining non-district schedule includes home games against Abilene TLCA (Sept. 11) and Albany (Sept. 18), as well as a road matchup against Eldorado (Sept. 25).

The Bluecats also currently have a bye week scheduled for the first week of October during Week 6 of the 2026 Texas high school football season.
