How Much Money Lane Kiffin's LSU Could Be Fined by SEC for Sam Leavitt Injury Report

LSU coach Lane Kiffin could be risking financial penalties should the SEC rule he violated rules by listing quarterback Sam Leavitt earlier this week as "doubtful" to play Saturday against Ole Miss.

Leavitt was listed as doubtful Wednesday and upgraded to questionable Thursday before he was removed from LSU's injury report Friday night.

The SEC rulebook warns of penalties in case of "failure to provide accurate and timely information on the availability report."

Financial penalties for football programs range for $25,000 for a first offense to $50,000 for second violations and $100,000 for any subsequent issues, according to the SEC.

Separate financial penalties could also be leveled to head coaches involved in rule violations, per the SEC.

Kiffin said Saturday Leavitt had "a scare" earlier this week but later "had a great recovery."

"Sam's doing great. Early in the week, he had a scare there, he didn't practice," Kiffin said in a Saturday morning appearance on ESPN's Pat McAfee Show. "But he's had a great recovery, worked really hard, and he's ready to go."

ESPN's Alex Scarborough reported "sources on the Ole Miss staff told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Thursday morning that they weren't convinced that Leavitt's appearance on the availability report was sincere."

Ole Miss coach Pete Golding said in a Thursday appearance on McAfee's show Kiffin had texted him before the injury report was released to say Leavitt was "out."

"I'm like, 'Yeah, buddy, I bet he is,'" Golding laughed. "I've been around here a lot of Wednesdays with you, man, for three and a half years. I said, 'I think our first one, we had 42 guys on the first-ever SEC injury report on a Wednesday.' I was like, 'Yeah, man. See you Saturday.'"

Kiffin further raised questions in his Thursday evening radio show , during which he discussed the upcoming Ole Miss matchup but did not address Leavitt's injury status.

Both teams are undefeated heading into Saturday's matchup, although Leavitt is looking to put together a more consistent performance after throwing a trio of first-half interceptions in last Saturday's win over Louisiana Tech.

Leavitt will be expected to start when No. 7 LSU takes on No. 8 Ole Miss at 7:30 p.m. ET.
