Como extend forward Roberta Picchi's contract after cancer diagnosis

Como have extended the contract of their forward Roberta Picchi after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Italian club, who will make their women's Serie A debut this season, said they extended Picchi's contract until the end of the 2027-28 season as part of their "continued commitment" to the player.

The 34-year-old Italian is set to begin cancer treatment and will be supported by Como's medical team, who will work with the ​specialists overseeing her care.

"Everyone at Como ​1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the ​support they need during the ​months ahead," the club said in a statement.

"At this time, we ask that Roberta's privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment ​and recovery."

Picchi was part of the Como side that finished 11 points clear of Lumezzane as they claimed the Serie B title last season to earn their first promotion to the top division of Italian women's football.

"Nothing ​should ever be taken for ​granted, ⁠and I feel fortunate," Picchi wrote on social media.

"It's time to play my match, but ⁠I'll ​be back even ​more determined."

Como, managed by Selena Mazzantini, begin their season against AC Milan on 26 September.
