Boise State Reveals Hand-Painted 40th Anniversary Football Helmets in New Photos

Boise State unveiled new football helmets celebrating the 40th anniversary of the team's blue turf at Albertsons Stadium on Wednesday.

The hand-painted helmets contain a throwback logo on the left side and the number "40" on the right side, utilizing a textured design similar to The Blue.

Seven hashmarks are also visible on the top of the helmet, representing each installation of The Blue.

The Broncos will use the helmets during their home opener against Memphis on Sept. 12.

The helmets were created by artist Armando Villarreal, who discussed the process that led to the design.

"As an artist, opportunities like this don't come around often," Villarreal said, per the school's announcement . "The Blue is one of the most recognizable symbols in college football, and being asked to create a helmet that honors its 40-year legacy was both an incredible privilege and a responsibility. I wanted every brushstroke and every detail to tell the story of how one bold idea transformed Boise State into a brand known around the world. My hope is that when fans see this helmet, they don't just see artwork, but see the history, pride, innovation and the generations of Bronco fans who made The Blue legendary."

Boise State is no stranger to introducing hand-painted alternate helmets, previously doing so ahead of its 2025 campaign.

After making a 2024 College Football Playoff appearance, the Broncos finished at 9-5 during their 2025 season under head coach Spencer Danielson.

As Boise State now prepares for its first year in the Pac-12, it'll look to start off on a high note against Memphis. Kickoff on Sept. 12 is at 6 p.m. ET.
