Miami will be without Malachi Toney against Notre Dame, and perhaps the rest of the regular season.

Toney suffered an ankle injury in practice on Wednesday and will now miss out on the No. 1 Hurricanes' trip to South Bend. Toney is set to undergo surgery due to the injury, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger .

A specific timeline isn't known yet, but the belief is that Toney will be out between four to six weeks. That would make it possible for him to return for the College Football Playoff. The first round games in the postseason are set to take place on Dec. 18-19, and the quarterfinals are scheduled for Dec. 30 and New Year's Day.

Toney is second among all receivers in college football with 73 catches and is one of only three players with more than 1,000 receiving yards. His 13 receiving touchdowns are only behind Oregon State WR Jesse Legree's 14 TD catches.

Entering Week 10, Toney's odds to win the Heisman Trophy at BetMGM were +325 and only behind teammate Darian Mensah (+150) and Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith (+275).

The sophomore is averaging nearly 130 yards a game for the No. 1 Hurricanes as Miami is one of just three unbeaten teams remaining in college football. The Hurricanes are 6.5-point underdogs at No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday night, as the Irish are seven spots lower in the CFP rankings than they are in the AP Top 25.

That position makes the game a potential must-win for Notre Dame's playoff hopes given its remaining schedule features Boston College, SMU and Syracuse. A year ago, Notre Dame missed the playoff at 10-2 largely because of a Week 1 loss to Miami. The Fighting Irish were ahead of the Hurricanes in all but the final iteration of the CFP rankings. Even though neither team played on conference championship weekend, Miami leapfrogged Notre Dame to make the College Football Playoff and subsequently advanced to the national championship game.

Toney would have been matched up against star Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore on Saturday, had he been able to go. The potential top-five pick in the 2027 NFL Draft missed the Irish's Week 9 win over Navy, but is expected to return on Saturday.

But now, the Hurricanes will have to find a way to both win in South Bend, and keep their playoff position intact, without Toney available.
