Baylor fired head football coach Dave Aranda over the weekend after the team lost its second straight game and fell to 4-3 on the season.
The Bears came into the 2026 campaign on the heels of four losing seasons in the past six years under Aranda's watch. And former quarterback Robert Griffin III said Monday during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show that he's interested in becoming the head coach and believes Baylor needs a major change:
Griffin, 36, spent four years at Baylor and was the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner. For his career, he threw for 10,366 yards, 78 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while rushing for 2,254 yards and another 33 scores. In his final season with the team, Baylor went 10-3 and won the Alamo Bowl.
He's undoubtedly a school legend. What he doesn't have, however, is any coaching experience, instead choosing a media career after his time in the NFL was cut short due to injuries. That would make him an extremely risky hire.
To Griffin's credit, he also listed some other candidates he believed would be worthy of the job such as Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson, UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor and a "darkhorse" in USC head coach Lincoln Riley.
And Baylor is an appealing opening, so plenty of experienced options will likely be available to the Bears.
"I think Baylor is a great job," Griffin noted. "It's a university I hold very dear and near to my heart. And the way that coaching happens, being a CEO-type of coach in college football is completely different. And you don't have to have experience coaching at the highest level to be successful. And I'm just tired of seeing Baylor be the stepchild to all of these other teams. We should be back on top."
It's just highly debatable whether Griffin is actually the person capable of getting them there.
