Oklahoma Sooners DT David Stone injured in practice

"When it rains, it pours" isn't quite fitting enough for an Oklahoma Sooners football program that has been flooded with injuries to key personnel since the start of fall camp. And now, they've been dealt arguably the biggest blow. Starting defensive tackle and All-American David Stone was injured at practice on Monday, with what is being reported as a lower-body injury.

George Stoia of SoonerScoop and On3 first reported the news, later confirmed by John Hoover of Sooners on SI . Though the injury and its severity are currently unknown, reports indicate Stone will undergo further testing Tuesday morning. Potentially, it's something Brent Venables will address at his Tuesday morning press conference.

It's a devastating injury for the in-state star. Stone became a team leader this offseason and is one of Oklahoma's best players. He's had a fantastic start to the season in 2026.

Stone is second among defensive linemen in snaps this season, according to Pro Football Focus. Through three games, Stone has 12 total tackles, a half sack, and two tackles for loss.

If Stone is going to be out for an extended period of time, the Sooners will need transfer Bishop Thomas to step into an even bigger role along the defensive line. Behind Jayden Jackson and Bishop, though, the depth gets cloudy. Can Boise State transfer Braxton Fely step up and provide valuable snaps at defensive tackle?

It's just a devastating injury for one of Oklahoma's best players and leaders.
