Kentucky vs Tennessee Prediction: Are the Wildcats Really CFP Good?

Kentucky at Tennessee might fly slightly under the radar, but it's one of Saturday's most important games. Here's the CFN preview and prediction.

Kentucky is No. 6 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, and Tennessee is No. 13. On any other Saturday, and in any other time slot, this would be the biggest game of the day, with huge SEC and CFP implications. This starts an hour before it's on, but by the second quarter, Georgia-Ole Miss and Miami-Notre Dame will both be ramping up while the Cats and Vols are humming. This will still earn a front-and-center spot, though. As good as Tennessee has been – including a relatively dominant 26-10 win over Alabama – it's coming off a 27-24 loss to South Carolina, and it's one loss away from being in a really, really tough spot to stay alive for the CFP. Kentucky got destroyed by Alabama in Week 2, but it's on a six-game winning streak. It pulled off great 35-34 wins over both LSU and South Carolina, and it won at Oklahoma. It has breathing room with just one loss, but with a rough finishing kick, beating Tennessee would be gigantic.

Tennessee has just one home game left after this, hosting LSU between road games at Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

Kentucky gets two of its last three games at home, hosting Florida next week and with Louisville to close, going to Missouri in between those two.

Tennessee has won the last five meetings, going back to a 34-7 UK win in 2020.

No, Kentucky isn't as talented as most of the top SEC teams, and yeah, there are a whole lot of things wrong that need tweaking. But this Wildcat team just doesn't give anyone anything to work with. Kentucky is No. 1 in the SEC in fewest penalties and No. 1 in turnover margin. The Wildcats have only been hit with 15 penalties over the last five weeks, and they haven't turned it over in any of the last four games. On the flip side, Tennessee gets flagged an average of 7.6 times per game, and while turnovers aren't a big problem, it gave the ball away eight times over the last four games.

Tennessee has to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and it has to keep the offense moving. It doesn't have to take any big chances against a Kentucky defense that's good against the run but doesn't do much to come up with third down stops. The Volunteer pass rush is the best in the nation, and it should be disruptive in the Kentucky backfield, but it really is about the offense. Tennessee's ground game has been fantastic – it's 16th in the nation – and that's a jumping-off point.

Kentucky vs Tennessee Prediction, Betting Lines

The Vols are 6-0 when the offense generates more than 320 total yards, and 0-2 when it doesn't. Only Vanderbilt and Youngstown State failed to get at least 340 yards against the Kentucky defense. Yes, Kentucky is for real. It's well coached, sharp as a tack, and it's one of those teams that just knows how to win. But with two weeks off after the South Carolina loss, the rejuvenated Vols will make a massive statement in both the SEC and College Football Playoff chases with a strong performance.
