Kalen DeBoer Hypes Keelon Russell, Says 'Sky's the Limit' for Alabama QB After Win vs. ECU

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell's first collegiate start went quite well on Saturday. The sophomore completed 18-of-30 passes for 256 yards and rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries en route to a 48-10 home win over East Carolina.

After the game, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer praised Russell's potential.

"I'm very hopeful we can be a complete offense," DeBoer told reporters . "It starts with your quarterback. We've always been quarterback-driven by what we can do. I think the sky's the limit for him."

Russell arrived in Tuscaloosa from Duncanville High School (Texas) last season. The 5-star prospect was ranked second overall on the 247Sports Composite list of the high school class of 2025 recruits.

Last year, Russell sat behind starting quarterback Ty Simpson, who has since left for the NFL and was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2026 NFL draft.

Now it's Russell's time to shine, and that's exactly what he did at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide will now hit the road and begin their SEC slate on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET when they visit Kentucky.
