Michigan HC Coy on Bryce Underwood-Tommy Carr QB1 Decision Ahead of Game vs. Cignetti, No. 6 Indiana
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is keeping his quarterback decision to himself ahead of Saturday's showdown against No. 6 Indiana.
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is keeping his quarterback decision to himself ahead of Saturday's showdown against No. 6 Indiana.
Per Larry Lage of the Associated Press, Whittingham said he has already decided whether Bryce Underwood or Tommy Carr will be the Wolverines' starting quarterback against the Hoosiers, but he doesn't want their opponents to know just yet.
"We're not going to tip our hand," Whittingham said Monday.
Underwood was benched at halftime against Penn State this past Saturday in favor of Carr, and the freshman led two touchdown drives in the third quarter and ran for a 12-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter that gave Michigan the two-score lead it needed to hold on to a 21-18 win.
Underwood has failed to impress this season, throwing two interceptions against the Nittany Lions to bring his season total to six with just five touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Carr has the momentum of Saturday's win and the famed lineage as the grandson of Lloyd Carr, who coached the Wolverines to the 1997 national title, and Tom Curtis, who was an All-American defensive back and holds Michigan's career interceptions record.
Perhaps now is the right time for Whittingham to turn to Carr as the Wolverines (4-2) try to salvage their season with the Hoosiers (6-1) coming to town.
