The 2. Bundesliga provides an intriguing encounter on the Ostalb, as Heidenheim get set to host Hannover.
Both sides have experienced contrasting fortunes in recent weeks, with Heidenheim struggling to rediscover their early-season form, while Hannover will be looking to build on their first league victory under new head coach Sandro Wagner.
With just four points separating the teams ahead of the 11th matchday, Sunday's meeting presents an important opportunity for both clubs to strengthen their position in the standings.
Heidenheim will be determined to get their promotion challenge back on track after suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Karlsruher SC last weekend.
Frank Schmidt's side appeared to be heading towards a point after Alessandro Vogt equalised late in the contest, only for the hosts to snatch all three points with a stoppage-time winner.
The result extended Heidenheim's winless run in the league to five matches, with their last victory coming against Holstein Kiel back in September.
Despite their recent difficulties, the recently-relegated side remain sixth in the standings with 15 points from their opening ten fixtures. Their home form has also been a positive, with Schmidt's side unbeaten at the Voith-Arena this season, recording three victories and two draws from their five matches.
Sunday's encounter also carries additional significance following Schmidt's announcement earlier this week that he will leave the club at the end of the 2026/27 campaign, bringing an end to his remarkable spell of almost 20 years in charge.
Speaking ahead of the Hannover fixture, Schmidt acknowledged the quality within the opposition ranks but expects an intensely contested encounter.
"Accordingly, Sunday will be a real battle," Schmidt explained, highlighting the importance of intensity, second balls and winning individual duels.
The Heidenheim coach also admitted that his team had been overrun in certain situations during their defeat to Karlsruhe, insisting that his players needed to rediscover their sharpness in training before returning to home action.
With their unbeaten home record on the line, Schmidt will be hoping his side can produce a response and return to winning ways.
Hannover travel to Heidenheim with renewed confidence after finally securing their first league victory under Sandro Wagner last weekend.
The Lower Saxony outfit came from behind to defeat Dynamo Dresden 2-1, with Husseyn Chakroun and Marcel Hartel both scoring within seven second-half minutes to turn the contest around.
The victory was particularly important following a difficult start to Wagner's tenure, which had seen Hannover struggle to translate their attacking potential into consistent results.
Having collected just 11 points from their opening ten league matches, Hannover currently occupy 11th position, leaving them four points behind Sunday's opponents.
Wagner will be encouraged by the character his players demonstrated against Dresden, particularly after falling behind during a difficult opening period. However, their away form remains a significant concern, with their only victory on the road this season coming against Darmstadt. They have lost their other four away fixtures.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Baden-Württemberg, Wagner was full of praise for the opposition, describing Heidenheim as a "top team in the second division".
The Hannover coach also highlighted their distinctive playing style, organisation at set-pieces and attacking presence inside the penalty area, acknowledging that his side face a significant challenge.
Wagner will also be hoping to get more out of Benjamin Källman, who has struggled to replicate the goalscoring form that saw him register 14 goals last season. The Finnish forward has yet to find the net in the current campaign, although his manager remains pleased with his overall contribution.
Nevertheless, last weekend's comeback victory provides Hannover with an opportunity to build some momentum, and another positive result would represent a significant step forward under their new coach.
Heidenheim have historically enjoyed the better of this fixture, winning six of the ten previous meetings between the clubs, compared to Hannover's four victories. Interestingly, none of their ten encounters in the 2. Bundesliga have ended in a draw.
The hosts will also take confidence from their recent record at the Voith-Arena, having won each of their last four home meetings with Hannover.
Their previous encounter came during the 2022/23 campaign, when Heidenheim secured a convincing 3-0 victory away from home, with Tim Kleindienst among the goalscorers.
Hannover's last victory against Heidenheim came in August 2021, when they recorded a 1-0 home success.
Heidenheim have relatively few injury concerns heading into Sunday's fixture, with Luca Kerber the only confirmed absentee.
The midfielder continues to struggle with muscular problems and will not be available for selection. However, Schmidt confirmed during Friday's press conference that the remainder of his squad had been involved in training.
Hannover have a slightly longer injury list, with Lars Gindorf, Benedikt Pichler, and Karl Steinmann all ruled out.
There is more encouraging news regarding Husseyn Chakroun, who suffered a shoulder injury during the Dresden encounter. Wagner confirmed that the attacker would be included in the travelling squad, although a decision on whether he starts or features from the bench will be made closer to kick-off.
1. FC Heidenheim (4-2-2-2): Dähne; Mhamdi, Mainka, Föhrenbach, Heule; Hennrich, Schöppner; Costly, Conteh; Zivzivadze, Kaufmann
