Folarin Balogun's Last-Minute Everton Transfer Collapse Detailed by Monaco Exec After Medical

Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro detailed some of the inner workings behind Folarin Balogun's failed transfer to Everton on deadline day.

The American striker reportedly failed his medical with the Toffees, which helped up the proposed deal.

Scuro said, however, that "Everton realized there was no issue and decided they were ready to sign the contract." That was around 11 p.m. in Monaco. Both clubs completed the necessary paperwork, only for Balogun to decide he was "not feeling comfortable" with Everton's handling of the situation.

Everton was prepared to pay £40 million, so Monaco missed out on a reasonably big fee.

Scuro didn't rule out Balogun's exit to a club outside of England.

"We are now waiting for Balo's return so we can sit down, discuss, and decide together on the next steps," he said, per ESPN's Mark Ogden . "Other markets remain open [Turkey, Saudi Pro League], and we are holding discussions regarding various players, including Balo. Yes, it is possible that other players who are not currently our primary focus may leave within the next 48 hours."

Balogun's reversal puts Everton in a tight spot.

The 25-year-old would've been a solid option for the forward line. Last season, he had 13 goals and four assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances, adding five more goals in the Champions League. He's also coming off a World Cup in which he was one of the United States' top performers.

Balogun would've occupied an important role in the squad because Everton is incredibly thin at striker. The club sold Beto to Fiorentina, leaving Thierno Barry as the only natural No. 9 . Tyrique George or Tyler Dibling could be deployed in the role but are better out wide.

In general, the window couldn't have gone much worse for manager David Moyes.

Everton might be able to paper over the cracks by signing some free agents, but it will have to wait until January to add any serious reinforcements. By then, Balogun could be on a different club entirely.
