Pick the LSJ girls high school athlete of week: Sept. 21-26

Here is a look at the latest Lansing State Journal girls high school athlete of the week candidates.

Voting is open until noon Sept. 30 to determine a winner, who will be featured in the LSJ.

The freshman continued the strong start to her varsity caeer by placing first at the opening CAAC Blue jamboree of the season on Thursday, Sept. 24. Cook had a time of 19:03.6 to win the event held at the East Lansing Soccer Complex. She helped DeWitt finish as the team champion.

Mackenzie O'Brien, Williamston swim and dive

The sophomore set a pool record in the 100 freestyle at Haslett on Tuesday, Sept. 22 with her time of 53.54 seconds, breaking a mark previously held by former Williamston standout Gwen Eisenbeis. O'Brien followed that by setting a pool record Thursday, Sept. 24 in the 50 free with her time of 25.43 seconds. O'Brien was also part of a 200 freestyle relay that set a program record and had a relay split time of 23.87.

Audrey VanderPloeg, Grand Ledge swim and dive

The senior broke a 23-year old school varsity 6 dive record and also the Grand Ledge pool record with her score of 279.55 at a meet Thursday, Sept. 24.
