Vikings villain Drew Brees will call Saints game — and receive halftime honor

FOX's analyst for this week's game happens to be the greatest player in the home team's franchise history.

· 492 words

Drew Brees has a busy Sunday coming up. The greatest player in New Orleans Saints history will be the analyst on FOX's call of Saints-Vikings, alongside play-by-play announcer Adam Amin and sideline reporter Kristina Pink. In that role, he'll be expected to call the game from an unbiased national perspective.

Then, at halftime, Brees will bolt out of the TV booth at the Superdome and be honored as a franchise legend. He's set to be inducted as the ninth member of the Saints' Ring of Honor in a halftime ceremony. Brees is also going to receive his Pro Football Hall of Fam Ring of Excellence on Sunday, although it's unclear when exactly that presentation is happening.

Brees' Ring of Honor induction has been scheduled for this date since August . It seems reasonable to wonder if the Saints officials who selected the Vikings game for the ceremony did so coincidentally or if there was some intention there, given the history between the two teams.

"It will be a privilege to recognize Drew as a member of our Ring of Honor in October," said Saints GM and EVP Mickey Loomis. "Drew's production and character both on and off the field sets him apart as the greatest Saint ever. This is a great opportunity for our organization and our fan base to show appreciation for his Hall of Fame career."

It just so happens that Brees will also be calling the game before and after the ceremony. He's in his first full year calling games for FOX after being hired to replace Mark Sanchez as Amin's broadcast partner last season.

It'll be interesting to see if Brees is able to prevent his understandable bias from sneaking into his commentary and analysis on Sunday's game.

During his 15-year career with the Saints, Brees played the Vikings seven times in the regular season and went 5-2. More notably, he faced the Vikings three times among his 18 career playoff games. Brees' Saints beat the Vikings in controversial fashion in the 2009-10 NFC championship game, on their way to a Super Bowl victory. They also lost in dramatic fashion in 2017-18 (the Minneapolis Miracle) and 2019-20 (Kyle Rudolph's overtime touchdown).

Brees was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.
