Thus far this season, Illinois is 1-1. The Illini opened the campaign with a 42-23 win over UAB. In the win, Illinois was led by quarterback Katin Houser, who connected on 13 of 17 passes for three touchdowns. Running back Ca'Lil Valentine carried the ball 11 times for 88 yards and one touchdown, while Collin Dixon caught six passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Robinson also had one 54-yard touchdown, which resulted in another touchdown for the Illini.

Illinois followed up the win with a loss, however, against ACC program Duke, a 31-27 setback at the hands of the Blue Devils. Houser had another solid game against Duke, connecting on 24 of 35 passes for 271 yards and one touchdown, but he had a crucial interception in the loss. Valentine also had a much quieter game, running the ball 18 times for just 56 yards and no scores, as the Illini's running game had a tough time getting going against Duke. Dixon, on the other hand, had a huge game, catching 11 passes for 166 yards and three scores.
