No. 4 Ohio State loses Julian Sayin, but stops No. 5 Indiana's 22-game win streak after Nick Marsh is barely out of bounds on go-ahead TD
The Big Ten clash turned out to be a defensive battle.
Indiana was oh-so-close to extending its win streak to 23 games.
Nick Marsh got wide open on a fourth down with just over a minute left, but was unable to stay in bounds on what would have been the go-ahead touchdown.
Just look at how close Marsh was to putting the No. 5 Hoosiers ahead on this pass from Josh Hoover. He knew right away that he might not have gotten his left foot down, though.
The win might have come at a significant cost, however. Ohio State QB Julian Sayin left the game in the second half after suffering an apparent right arm injury on a sack. Sayin ran back to the locker room gingerly holding his right arm, and returned to the sideline with his arm in a sling.
He was replaced for the rest of the game by freshman Luke Fahey.
Sayin did not have his best game before the injury. He was just 15-of-29 passing for 235 yards and threw two touchdowns to go along with two interceptions. But that second touchdown throw ended up being the game-winning score, when he threw up a long pass to Jeremiah Smith in the end zone.
The TD was Smith's first in three games against the Hoosiers. The Heisman favorite finished with four catches for 68 yards and the touchdown.
An extended absence for Sayin could be a big issue for an Ohio State team that travels to No. 19 USC after its Week 8 bye and then has Oregon, Northwestern and Nebraska before playing Michigan to end the season. As you'd expect, Fahey was a bit overwhelmed after replacing Sayin. He failed to complete either of his two pass attempts and took a sack.
A lot of things went against Indiana on Saturday
Not only was Marsh inches away from a game-winning score after his two long TD catches powered Indiana's Week 6 comeback against Nebraska, the Hoosiers lost fumbles on back-to-back possessions to start the second half.
Indiana hadn't lost a fumble in 1,437 offensive plays. It was a streak that dated back to the first game of that 22-game win streak that began in Week 1 of the 2025 season.
Kicker Nico Radicic missed a short field goal and then came up short on a 55-yard attempt. Were his two misses a reason why Indiana went for two after its second TD? After cutting Ohio State's lead to 19-13, Indiana didn't kick the PAT.
It was an inherently risky move. The failure to convert the 2-point attempt would have put the Buckeyes up nine — and two scores — with a field goal.
Hoover also appeared to suffer a right shoulder injury in the second half. He landed on his shoulder while scrambling and left the game for a play in obvious pain. He quickly returned to the field, but he was visibly grimacing after some throws.
The TCU transfer finished the game 20-of-40 passing for 296 yards. Much of that yardage went to Charlie Becker, who had nine catches for 165 yards.
The win should not derail Indiana's playoff hopes, especially as USC is the only ranked opponent remaining on the Hoosiers' schedule. Indiana plays at Michigan in Week 8 and then at home against Minnesota on Halloween before its bye week to begin November.
