UMass Upsets Rutgers as Massive Underdogs, Snaps Longest Losing Streak in CFB, Final Box Score Stats

Led by a stellar performance from quarterback William Watson III, UMass pulled off a shocking 37-21 upset victory over Rutgers to begin the 2026 college football season at SHI Stadium on Thursday night.

The Minutemen were able to secure the win despite entering the game as 28.5-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook .

UMass also snapped a 16-game losing streak on Thursday, as the team's last victory occurred in Oct. 2024.

While Rutgers scored a touchdown on its opening possession, the Minutemen didn't waste any time before responding.

UMass found the end zone on each of its first three drives, highlighted by a 31-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Joseph Griffin Jr. that gave the team a 21-7 lead.

The Minutemen maintained a 24-7 edge at halftime.

While UMass slowed down offensively in the second half, head coach Joe Harasymiak's defense stepped up throughout the majority of the final two quarters.

Rutgers eventually cut the deficit to 16 points and had the ball with just over four minutes left in the game, although a UMass interception and subsequent Minutemen touchdown ended any hopes of a late comeback.

The Scarlet Knights finished with 349 total yards as a team, but committed four turnovers and converted just three of 11 opportunities on third down.

Meanwhile, UMass racked up 397 yards of offense without turning the ball over.

After posting an 0-12 record in 2025, the Minutemen are now 1-0 in 2026.
