Everything Dabo Swinney Said About Benching Clemson's QB and Bill Belichick Relationship

After Tait Reynolds played most of the snaps in Saturday's win over Georgia Southern, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is going to roll with him as the starting quarterback for this week's game against Bill Belichick and North Carolina.

Speaking to reporters leading up to Saturday's ACC matchup (beginning at 7:30 mark), Swinney explained Reynolds has passed Christopher Vizzina on the depth chart even with Vizzina suffering an elbow injury against Georgia Southern.

"He wasn't perfect," Swinney said in evaluating Tait's performance, "but you saw some things that we saw in the spring that we're like okay, now you see it in real time. We just feel like that's the decision that needed to be made. And you hate it because it's really there for CV, but I mean this is a performance deal, and he had a lot of opportunity on things that you grade him every play, and things that were there for him to keep the job, he just didn't do the routine things that he needs to do. Nothing to do with anything else, but that's where we are, and so we made the change. We knew we had a kid coming here that is pretty special, and we think he's got a bright, bright future. Hopefully he gets off to a good start this week, but he'll get all the reps and we're gonna go play."

Looking ahead to Saturday's matchup with North Carolina (starts at 27:05 mark), Swinney described Belichick as "probably the best" coach in the history of the sport.

Swinney added that he has been able to spend "hours" around Belichick since he started coaching in the ACC and one of his takeaways is to "just be who you are" from their interactions with each other.

"He doesn't really get distracted by noise," Swinney said of Belichick. "I mean, he just kind of does his job. I think that's what he's always said, right, is 'do your job.' And I think he just shows up and he loves football, and I think he just focuses on doing the job."

Swinney also admitted he still gets a little starstruck when he coaches against Belichick.

"It's an honor to coach against him, really," he said. "Sometimes I still can't believe he's the coach at North Carolina, but he is, and we've gotta play him."

This will be the second meeting between Swinney and Belichick. Clemson took care of business in the first matchup last year with a 38-10 victory at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.

Saturday's game will be played at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers will look to get over the .500 mark after splitting their first two games of the season. North Carolina is 2-0 with wins over TCU and East Tennessee State.

Clemson's quarterback situation will be a key focus of this game. The Tar Heels defense has allowed a total of 13 points and 353 passing yards in their two wins.

Reynolds is a true freshman who was a 3-star recruit in the 2026 class. He finished 16-of-27 for 178 yards through the air and ran for 38 yards on 14 carries against Georgia Southern.

Vizzina led the Tigers on their lone touchdown drive in the game. He also threw an interception and averaged just 2.7 yards per attempt on seven pass attempts. The offense got five field goals with Reynolds, who averaged 6.6 yards per attempt.

A loss would drop Clemson to 1-2 after three games for the second consecutive season.
