Amid a backdrop of "Championes" chants at the Emirates Stadium, Premier League title holders Arsenal got the 2026-27 season underway with a confident, straightforward win against newly promoted Coventry City.

Kai Havertz got the opening goal of the campaign, coolly guiding home Riccardo Calafiori's pass to give the Gunners a deserved lead in the 15th minute.

Bukayo Saka got in on the fun 10 minutes later, tapping home from yards out with the goal at his mercy following good work from Declan Rice and Christos Tzolis.

The champions went into the half with a comfortable 2-0 lead, holding 67% possession and restricting the Sky Blues to just two shots, neither of which was on target.

With the game all but won, the Gunners took their foot off the gas for the remainder of the second half, but they remained far superior to a Coventry side that will need a lot more to survive another season in the Premier League.

It was a baptism of fire for Coventry in their first Premier League game for 25 years, but with fellow promoted club Hull City up next, they have a real chance to grab what could already be a vital three points.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will look to keep up the momentum on the road against Aston Villa. With an effortless 3-0 win, the Gunners have already put the league on notice.
