Power outage leads to 100-minute delay ahead of No. 19 SMU and Florida State

The final game of Week 1 didn't start on time.

No. 19 SMU's game at Florida State was delayed after the power went out minutes before the scheduled kickoff time of just after 7:30 p.m. ET. The game finally began at 9:15 p.m. ET with partial lighting in the stadium and limited electronics.

The game clock was set to be kept on the field, players didn't have helmet communications and there would be no instant replay reviews because of the lack of power.

After what happened Saturday in Ann Arbor , that's an important point.

Per ESPN's broadcast, a transformer blew as the power was trying to be restored to the stadium. What initially hoped to be a very brief delay stretched over an hour.

The game is the first for the Mustangs in 2026, while FSU is already 1-0. The Seminoles played in Week Zero and beat New Mexico State 34-17. Florida State is off in Week 2, while SMU is scheduled to host FCS school UC Davis at 4 p.m. ET on Sept. 12.
