Napoli provide update on Scott McTominay after undergoing heart surgery in Manchester

Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay has undergone a successful surgical procedure to address a minor cardiac condition. The former Manchester United midfielder was recently found to have a mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm that was not considered to be serious but did require medical intervention.

The 29-year-old went under the knife in Manchester on Tuesday, with Napoli declaring the operation a 'complete success.' The Serie A club added that their midfielder is anticipated to return to the field following the upcoming international break.

"On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital," Napoli said in a statement, via The Mirror . "The operation was a complete success. McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."

The Scotland international has also played down the seriousness of the issue, saying at a recent awards ceremony: "I'm fine, the procedure was something I'd planned to do with the club for quite a while."

McTominay's absence due to the procedure caused him to sit out Napoli's 3-2 road loss to Inter Milan last Saturday. He will remain sidelined for three additional Napoli fixtures, among them their UEFA Champions League home opener against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Max Allegri will be hoping to have McTominay back in contention when his side welcomes Frosinone on October 10 in their first fixture following the international break. Napoli have dropped points in two of their opening three Serie A matches, leaving them sitting 12th in the standings, six points adrift of league leaders AS Roma.

Scotland will also be forced to do without McTominay as new manager Sebastien Pocognoli begins his tenure. Coming off a disappointing World Cup group stage exit, Scotland will aim to regroup across four Nations League fixtures scheduled between September 26 and October 6.

McTominay's long-term prospects in Naples have also generated considerable discussion this week. Despite being contracted until 2028, there remains uncertainty over whether he will put pen to paper on a new deal.

He joined Napoli under Antonio Conte two years ago in a transfer worth £25.7 million (around $33.7 million), claiming the Italian title in his debut season and earning the Serie A Player of the Season award. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna addressed the questions surrounding the 29-year-old in an interview with DAZN .

"Scott said he doesn't know if he'll renew at this time," Manna explained. "He has a two-year contract, we want to do it, and he wants to do it, too. It's not always easy to make things coincide, but we're trying."

McTominay departed United in the summer of 2024 after spending over two decades with the Red Devils, having made 255 first-team appearances and lifting both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
