Hoosiers Daily News: Indiana’s coordinators could be Big Ten coaching candidates

Indiana football has managed to maintain its two excellent coordinators, Mike Shanahan on offense and Bryant Haines on defense, through the first three seasons of Curt Cignetti's coaching tenure in Bloomington. Everyone knows that can't really last though.

There will come a day when neither is patrolling the sideline or watching from the box. Until then, it's worth enjoying their presence while they're here .

The two have already been speculated as possible candidates for the Maryland head coaching job should the Terrapins move on from Mike Locksley this offseason, largely due to their connections around the DMV from their time at James Madison.

Maryland is one of multiple programs in the Big Ten where the current staff stands on shaky ground. Rutgers is included there as well and Purdue and Wisconsin have something to worry about if real progress isn't shown this season.

The issue at hand for Maryland, and any other programs interested in Shanhan and Haines' services, is that the two already have a really good situation at Indiana. They enjoy great job security, work with talent they've identified and developed over time, continue learning from Cignetti, have access to strong resources and, of course, are well compensated.

Shanahan and Haines can afford to be picky about their next roles, whatever those may be. They aren't leaving the situation they're in just for the sake of the "head coach" title. Any programs looking to hire them are going to have to show real support to attract any real interest.
