Head coach Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels went on the road Saturday and scored a 38-21 victory over the UConn Huskies at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut.
UNC was a 7.5-point road favorite, per FanDuel Sportsbook , and it made good on that billing to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Following one of the Tar Heels' best offensive performances of the season, here is a look at the top statistical producers for North Carolina and UConn from Saturday's game:
Both teams got off to a slow start on offense, as the only points in the first quarter came courtesy of Belichick's defense.
Off a deflection, UNC linebacker Timir Hickman-Collins intercepted Huskies quarterback Kalieb Osborne and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown:
That play seemed to heighten the sense of urgency for both offenses, as five of the next six drives ended in touchdowns.
An 18-yard pass from Osborne to wide receiver Ryder Treadway tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter:
However, North Carolina answered with its first two offensive touchdowns of the game, as Benjamin Hall scored on a 39-yard run and quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipp:
After Osborne's 24-yard touchdown pass to Cam Abshire to shrink the deficit to seven, the Tar Heels restored their 14-point lead entering halftime, as Edwards hit tight end Jelani Thurman from three yards out with 24 seconds remaining in the opening half:
Early in the third quarter, UConn cut into the North Carolina lead once again when when running back Cyncir Bowers scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown, making it 28-21:
A North Carolina field goal got the lead back into double digits, and after the Tar Heels missed a field goal on their next drive, UConn had a chance to take advantage.
However, Osborne threw his second interception of the day, getting picked off by defensive back Jalon Thompson:
That gave North Carolina great field position, and it took advantage with another short touchdown pass from Edwards to Thurman to put the game away with 3:38 left in the fourth:
UNC ended a two-game losing streak with Saturday's win, and it is now just one victory away from becoming bowl eligible for the first time under Belichick.
The first chance to get that all-important sixth win will come next Saturday when the Tar Heels host the Louisville Cardinals.
As for the Huskies, they have now dropped back-to-back games and fell to 4-5 with the loss on Saturday, and they will try to bounce back next Saturday in a home game against James Madison.
