The Ballon d'Or race is rarely decided by numbers alone. Club silverware, individual brilliance and performances on the international stage can all shape the vote, with the balance between them often proving decisive.
The 2026 race has produced a fascinating collection of contenders. Harry Kane has enjoyed a prolific season at Bayern Munich , Kylian Mbappé has continued to rewrite goalscoring records, and Lionel Messi has shown he remains capable of delivering on the biggest stage. Meanwhile, Rodri , Lamine Yamal and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia all have compelling cases of their own.
But with major trophies won and individual records broken, who has done enough to claim football's most prestigious individual honour on Monday night?
Team trophies: FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA World Cup.
Individual awards: FIFA World Cup Golden Ball
Rodri knows what it takes to win the Ballon d'Or, having claimed the award in 2024 after an outstanding season for Manchester City and Spain. Another World Cup triumph has strengthened his case for a second victory.
The Spain captain was named Player of the Tournament as La Roja lifted the trophy, recognition of his influence on the biggest stage.
His biggest obstacle is the club campaign. While the World Cup Golden Ball is a major point in his favour, a less successful season at club level leaves him with ground to make up on rivals who combined individual brilliance with domestic and European silverware.
Team trophies: Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup
Individual awards: UEFA Champions League Player of the Season
The Georgian was in devastating form as Paris Saint-Germain made it back-to-back Champions League wins in 2025/26.
Kvaratskhelia scored 10 goals and created six more in 16 European appearances for the Champions League winners, and added nine more goals across all competitions.
Georgia's absence from the World Cup hurts his chances, with major tournaments often decisive in Ballon d'Or votes.
Individual awards: FIFA World Cup Silver Ball, FIFA World Cup Silver Boot, MLS Golden Boot, MLS Most Valuable Player
A record-extending ninth Ballon d'Or looked a real possibility for Lionel Messi as Argentina reached a second straight World Cup final, but defeat to Spain has reduced his chances.
The Ballon d'Or race is crowded with players who have enjoyed exceptional seasons in Europe. Messi's achievements are remarkable, but the strength of the opposition means another victory would require a particularly persuasive argument.
Messi, however, was magnificent in North America, showing that even at 39 he remains one of the game's greatest talents.
Individual awards: FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, FIFA World Cup Bronze Ball, UEFA Champions League Top Scorer, Pichichi Trophy
Kylian Mbappe has argued the Ballon d'Or is an individual accolade that shouldn't be decided by team success. Real Madrid and France both fell short in the big tournaments, despite Mbappe's brilliance.
The leading scorer in La Liga, the Champions League, and World Cup, Mbappe made his mark on the major events. His 10-goal World Cup campaign saw him shatter the all-time goal record and become the first multi-Golden Boot winner.
The absence of major team trophies is the obvious drawback. Ballon d'Or voters have often favoured players who combine individual excellence with collective success, and Mbappé cannot point to a Champions League or World Cup winner's medal this time.
But if the award is genuinely about the best individual player of the year, Mbappé has an argument few can match.
Team trophies: La Liga, Supercopa de España, FIFA World Cup
Individual awards: La Liga Player of the Season, Zarra trophy
Lamine Yamal seems destined for Ballon d'Or success at some stage, after a runners-up finish last year. At 19, he would become the youngest-ever winner, following a sensational season that delivered La Liga and World Cup success.
He scored 16 goals and assisted 11 more during Barcelona 's title win, but failed to have a major impact - despite success - for Spain in the summer. He scored just once in eight games during an injury-impacted World Cup.
Team trophies: Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, German Super Cup
Individual awards: Bundesliga top scorer, European Golden Shoe
Harry Kane might have the most well-rounded argument of any contender.
The Bayern Munich striker scored 61 goals in 51 games as his side secured a domestic treble, while his scoring record earned him the European Golden Shoe. Few players can match that combination of individual production and team success.
While England failed to end their tournament drought, Kane's six goals helped the Three Lions to a third-place finish at the World Cup. It represents England's best-ever performance on foreign soil.
Individual awards: Bundesliga Player of the Season
Olise outperformed club teammate Kane to win the Bundesliga's Player of the Season award. The winger scored 15 league goals and provided 19 assists, while he was named in the Team of the Tournament for the Bundesliga, Champions League, and FIFA World Cup.
Olise has the numbers to enter the conversation, but he may need a stronger individual narrative to turn an excellent season into a Ballon d'Or-winning one.
