New Borussia Mönchengladbach signing Daiki Hashioka was taken to hospital after a collision during the 3-0 defeat at RB Leipzig in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday.
The Japan defender, who suffered pain in the neck area, was carried off on a stretcher.
"He is a tough guy. We really have to be careful, especially in that area. He was immobilized immediately. Now we are hoping it all turns out well," Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder told reporters.
The 27-year-old collided with Leipzig's Antonio Nusa in the 72nd minute. The Norwegian was booked for the incident.
