The end of October has arrived, along with the ramp-up to the 2026-27 College Football Playoff (CFP), which will unveil its bracket in roughly five weeks.
Fourth-ranked Indiana is looking to make another push into the CFP, and the Hoosiers will likely need to survive a Week 9 matchup with Big Ten rival Minnesota to do it. The Golden Gophers, meanwhile, are sitting at 5-2 and hoping to stay alive in the conference race.
With plenty of eyes on the defending-champion Hoosiers, Bloomington will play host to ESPN's College GameDay , which will serve as a preamble to the week's marquee matchup.
Here's a look at what to expect, including scheduling information and predictions for the headline Big Ten battle.
Venue: Showalter Fountain/Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana
Crew: Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban
Indiana is a pretty big favorite over Minnesota, and there's a good reason for that. While the Hoosiers lost several key contributors from last year's championship team to the NFL—including quarterback Fernando Mendoza—Curt Cignetti has done an excellent job of reloading.
New quarterback Josh Hoover, a transfer from TCU, has done a very admirable job of replacing the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft. Hooever has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,741 yards, 18 touchdowns, one interception, and a career-high QB rating of 170.9.
Though Hoover faced some scrutiny while trying to replace Mendoza early in the season, he's settled in as a reliable signal-caller.
"I'm glad he's our quarterback," Cignetti said in September, per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg .
As was the case for Mendoza last year, Hoover has largely been tasked with complementing an elite defense. The Hoosiers rank second in points allowed per game (12.0), and they'll usually have a chance to win if the offense can limit mistakes.
Indiana's only loss this season was a 19-15 contest against Ohio State.
Of course, we've seen several top teams fall in monumental upsets this year, and Minnesota is a threat to keep this one close.
Led by quarterback Drake Lindsey, running back Darius Taylor, and receiver Javon Tracy, the Golden Gophers have averaged a solid 26.6 points per game. Their defense, meanwhile, has allowed just over 20 points per game.
However, both of Minnesota's losses (versus Mississippi State and at Purdue) have come in blowout fashion. The Gophers are scrambling to keep pace in the Big Ten, which is led by Ohio State (6-1) and undefeated UCLA. Minnesota will likely need Indiana's offense to stall to have any shot at the upset.
That could happen, though, as Hoover continues to deal with an injury to his throwing arm. Hoover did not look like himself during last week's sluggish overtime win over Michigan—though Cignetti expects him to be back to form this week.
"I expect him to be fine and better this week," Cignetti said, per Michael Niziolek of The Herald-Times .
"Fine" should be good enough to get the win, but it might not be enough for Indiana to cover. The Hoosiers are just 1-7 against the spread this season, a trend that may very well continue this weekend.
