Pat McAfee has spent years turning sports into a loud, irreverent celebration, but the ESPN personality says the darker side of public attention has become difficult to ignore.

Amid the fallout from his University of Utah controversy, McAfee shared screenshots of threatening messages and revealed that he had been avoiding his social media mentions and direct messages because of the abuse.

His emotional statement prompted an outpouring of support, with fans reminding McAfee that the joy he brings to sports still matters to millions.

Pat McAfee Opens Up About Threats Against Him and His Family

On Wednesday, McAfee posted screenshots of threatening messages he said he had received online, including one from a man in Ohio. He admitted that he had deliberately avoided his mentions and direct messages amid the ongoing controversies.

"I've stayed away from my mentions and DM's this month since these back to back days but.. I'm sure if I went in there now, I'd find some wishes for and threats of death for me," McAfee wrote.

The ESPN personality also reflected on the heightened security surrounding a College GameDay broadcast in Tennessee last year. He noted that the FBI, Disney security, Tennessee State Police, Knoxville Police and university authorities coordinated security measures while recalling that security personnel discussed the possibility of him wearing a bulletproof vest.

McAfee also revisited the backlash over his 2024 comments about Algerian Olympic champion Imane Khelif. His original segment included inaccurate claims about Khelif's gender, although McAfee argued Wednesday that subsequent coverage failed to reflect the empathy he also tried to express during the discussion.

Since then, he said, mistakes, missteps and misquotes have repeatedly reignited backlash against him.

"I'm trying my best in real time but.. I am to talk about sports and care about the future of sports," McAfee added. "I owe everything to sports. I'm grateful as hell to do what I do."

"I literally try to love every minute of the incredible opportunities I get to experience but.. it's certainly all a much different life than I could've ever expected. I try to give everything I have, all the time.. I am very sorry to those that despise me."

McAfee's emotional statement prompted an outpouring of support from fans.

"Thanks for getting me through my work days for the PAST 6 YEARS PAT! I still sing the Chris Rice intro sometimes when I'm feeling down. THANK YEW TO YOU AND THE BOYS!!! A lot of us love you brother and I can't imagine what you must feel with these things going on," one said.

"THE PAT MCAFEE HATE IS RIDICULOUS. PAT IS ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS. Pat spends his days spreading positivity and bringing people together through sports. His mantra has always been: 'Be a friend, tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. PatMcAfeeShow does not deserve death threats or attacks on his family and name," ML Football wrote .

McAfee joined College GameDay in 2022 before launching his daily ESPN program in 2023. The college football show's viewership figures reflect its continued popularity, with an average of 2.8 million viewers through Week 7. Its Week 8 broadcast from Utah averaged 2.5 million viewers, with the final hour attracting 3.1 million.

Those figures show that College GameDay continues to draw a substantial audience amid the controversy.

"Keep doing you bud. Y'all are bringing joy to millions and millions of people each week," one said.

"Love Yew brother. Will always support the McAfee Mafia. Chuck those marks. 'Be a friend tell a friend something nice, it might change their lives' never rings more true here. You and all the lads are and additive to society and I'm forever greatful to celebrate ball with you boys," a fan wrote .

"Know that a many folks appreciate your candor, and…and we can see when you know where the line is, you measure the worth of crossing it or feather the line. Stand strong, trust the gut. The gut digest, and you do a great job of digesting!" a person said .

McAfee said he remains focused on celebrating sports and bringing people together despite the challenges that have come with his public profile.
