Kyle Shanahan's 49ers Contract Extension Uncovered in New NFL Rumors After Week 1 Win vs. Rams

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly signed head coach Kyle Shanahan to a contract extension during the offseason.

According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the Niners "quietly" extended Shanahan's deal, which was previously believed to be expiring at the end of the 2027 season.

Shanahan's first game under his new contract was an excellent one for the Niners, as they dominated the Los Angeles Rams en route to a 27-7 Week 1 victory in Melbourne on Thursday.

As the Super Bowl favorites, the Rams were expected to get their 2026 campaign off to a strong start, but they had no real answers for the 49ers on either side of the ball.

Offensively, the 49ers rushed for 174 yards as a team and quarterback Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, while the San Francisco defense held reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford to 155 yards, no touchdowns and one interception through the air.

Shanahan began his 10th season as the 49ers' head coach on Thursday, and the results have largely been excellent during his tenure.

The 46-year-old owns a 83-67 head coaching record with five playoff appearances, three NFC West titles and two trips to the Super Bowl.

Despite dealing with numerous key injuries on both offense and defense last season, Shanahan led the Niners to a 12-5 record and a road upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round of the playoffs.

The 49ers were healthier entering the 2026 season, and some of their new additions made instant impacts, including wide receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel, who both caught a touchdown pass against the Rams.

With their decisive win over the Rams on Thursday, Shanahan's 49ers feel like a legitimate threat to challenge L.A. and the Seattle Seahawks for NFC West supremacy this season.
