From NFL opener at Lumen Field: Nick Emmawori is out, other Seahawks inactives

Nick Emmanwori couldn't do to the Patriots what he'd done to them in the Super Bowl.

It's tough to terrorize an offense while in a hoodie on the sideline.

The Seahawks ' dynamic, hybrid safety/linebacker was inactive as expected for the Super Bowl champions' NFL kickoff game against New England at packed Lumen Field Wednesday night.

The team listing him officially as questionable on Tuesday seemed like gamesmanship, to keep the Patriots guessing on Emmanwori's status. He hasn't fully participated in a practice since minicamp in June. He has arthroscopic surgery in July on his ankle. He sprained it in February four days before the Super Bowl, then played as part of Seattle 's domination of Drake Maye and New England's offense in Super Bowl 60.

Starting deep safety Ty Okada also wasn't playing Wednesday. He had a hamstring injury.

Their absences forced the Seahawks to sign to the 53-man roster safety AJ Finley. They also elevated from the practice squad veteran safety Rodney Thomas II , a former Indianapolis Colts starter, and running back Velus Jones Jr.

The team waived second-year guard Bryce Cabledue to get Finley onto the active roster.

Finley was back deep at safety with Julian Love in the starting defense during pregame warmups. Love was the only healthy safety on the active roster at the start of the day.

Rookie Julian Neal was outside at cornerback, making Devon Witherspoon free to move inside when coach Mike Macdonald wanted to go with a nickel set with five defensive backs. Neal was Seattle's third-round draft choice this spring. He missed almost all of the preseason and August with a leg injury.

Neal's injury and Nehemiah Pritchett 's struggling in tackling as the third cornerback were why the Seahawks signed former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs late last month. Diggs remained on the practice squad for the opener Wednesday.

NFL rules permit a team to elevate a maximum of two players from the practice squad for each game.

Seattle's other inactive players for the opening game: injured (again) wide receiver Tory Horton , rookie backup guard Beau Stephens, third quarterback Jalen Milroe , tight end Nick Kallerup and defensive end Mike Morris .

The Patriots' notable inactive player was running back TryVeyon Henderson. He was out with an injured ankle.
