Haley Cavinder reveals the unexpected DM from Cowboys star Jake Ferguson that changed her love life forever: “Married life is great"

But one simple question about her golf game turned into a romance that led to their marriage in June. During an appearance on PEOPLE’s WAG World series, Cavinder revealed how Ferguson made the first move and why her initial impression of him has lasted. The 25-year-old, who has millions of followers across social media, also explained how her twin sister Hanna helped shape her view of the NFL star before their relationship became serious.Jake Ferguson started their relationship with a simple DM“He just DMed me and asked how my golf game was,” Haley told WAG World host Skyler Caruso on Friday, October 9.The opening message was casual, but their connection developed quickly. Haley had graduated from the University of Miami in 2023, placing her near Ferguson’s family in Florida. His mother had a home in Fort Myers Beach, while Haley’s grandparents lived in Naples. The two locations were about two hours apart, making it easier for the couple to spend time together.“When I first met Jake, I just graduated from the University of Miami,” she recalled.Neither person was necessarily searching for a serious relationship. Haley said she preferred to keep her expectations in check rather than become too invested too soon.“I don’t like to get high or too low when it comes to that stuff,” she said. “I wasn’t looking for anything, and I don’t know if Ferg was at that time either. But then we spent 10 days together straight, and he’s just a good, down-to-earth human being.”Those 10 days gave her a clearer picture of the person behind the Cowboys uniform. Dating a professional athlete can bring its own challenges, particularly when public attention becomes part of a relationship. Haley said Ferguson stood out because his personality away from football matched what she had hoped to find.“Right away I was just like, wow, outside of who he is on the field, dating athletes in this space and even probably dating us, we all come with a lot and being in the environment, you never know what you’re going to get,” she said. “I found a good one. My first impression is still who he is today.”She added, “He’s just really, really grounded. He makes me better in everything.”Hanna Cavinder’s approval came before the weddingFerguson also had to win over Haley’s twin sister. Hanna admitted she initially struggled to believe the Cowboys player was as genuine as he seemed.“I thought it was fake, really, because I thought that’s way too good to be true. There’s no way somebody’s going to continue that,” Hanna said. She wanted to see whether his behavior would last six months.For Haley, Hanna’s opinion carried considerable weight. The sisters share a close bond, and Haley wanted the person she was dating to earn the trust of the person who knew her best.“Hanna’s the most important human being in my life, and I think that she knows me best,” Haley said.Ferguson eventually passed that test. He proposed on a beach in April 2025, and the couple married on June 20, 2026, at Miami’s Biltmore Hotel in a beachfront ceremony.Haley said marriage has not dramatically changed their relationship. “Married life is great... I think that it’s just what we were doing. I think nothing’s changed. I still feel like we’re dating, but we’re married,” she said.She acknowledged that their bond now carries a deeper commitment. “I think that maybe it’s more serious, I would say. Serious meaning we’re family now. I have my family, but now we have our family... and my little puppy, Boozer.”For Haley, Ferguson’s appeal was never just his NFL career or public profile.
