Sean Payton Reacts to Broncos' 'Frustrating' Loss to Chiefs, Giving Up Play-Calling to Davis Webb

Davis Webb's first game as the Denver Broncos' play-calling was one to forget.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton made headlines this offseason when he revealed he was giving up play-calling duties to the team's new offensive coordinator, but Denver managed just 10 points in Monday's 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Just as a head coach always, whether you're calling the plays or you're not. Regardless of who's calling the plays. When you have a game like that, and you're the head coach, you know it's frustrating," Payton told reporters after the season-opening loss (1:30 mark).

"It's disappointing. And I don't know that the feeling is any different, whether you're calling them or not. Honestly."

Denver scored its touchdown in the opening quarter but didn't find the end zone the rest of the way as it struggled in the aerial attack and on the ground.

Quarterback Bo Nix went 17-of-28 for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception while also losing a fumble. The rushing attack managed just 61 yards on the ground, and no pass-catcher eclipsed tight end Evan Engram's 43 yards.

Payton also discussed the play-calling during a halftime interview with ESPN:

The Chiefs enjoyed a commanding 392-176 advantage in total yards with Kenneth Walker III (173 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards) tallying more offensive production than the entire Denver unit.

While this was Webb's first game as the play-caller in the offensive coordinator role, he was a quarterbacks coach for the Broncos the past three seasons. He is familiar with Nix and the offense and will surely be given another opportunity to turn things around after Monday's loss.

But the offense will have to be much better than it was in the opener if the Broncos are once again going to win the AFC West.
